As it turned out, the old lady was very wrong. Scientists of the Austrian Institute of Molecular Biotechnology have managed to cultivate a real human brain in the laboratory. True, you can see it only in a good magnifier, because the pride of researchers in diameter does not exceed four millimeters. The authors claim that in a nine-week-old embryo, the brain looks exactly like this. The gray matter grown in the bioreactor consists of several sections, scientists call them organoids of the nervous tissue. The mini-brain composed of organoids is similar in structure to the present one, although different parts of it are arranged haphazardly. However, they also correctly interact with each other and transmit different signals. Specialists intend to use the mini-brain in order to understand the causes of various diseases, for example microcephaly, and, possibly, to learn how to prevent their occurrence. The initial cells of gray matter specialists have grown from several skin cells, which are much easier to obtain than neurons.
