Warner Brothers Wednesday announced a fresh addition to the iconic Matrix franchise, revealing that Drew Goddard, acclaimed for his work on “The Martian,” will both write and direct the upcoming installment.


Unlike its predecessors, this film marks the first Matrix movie not directly involving its co-creators Lana or Lilly Wachowski, although Lana’s attachment as an executive producer maintains a connection to the series’ roots. While there’s anticipation about the potential return of franchise stars like Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie Anne-Moss, no official word has been released yet.


 



Drew Goddard’s involvement injects a substantial dose of sci-fi expertise into the project. He boasts an impressive resume, having started his career as a writer on the beloved 90s show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” before contributing to hit series like “Angel,” “Alias,” and “Lost.” Additionally, Goddard is known for creating Marvel’s acclaimed “Daredevil” series, which aired on Netflix from 2015 to 2018, and for his role as an executive producer and director on NBC’s widely beloved comedy series “The Good Place.” His screenwriting credits include notable films like “Cloverfield,” “The Cabin in the Woods,” and “World War Z.”


The decision to greenlight another Matrix film stemmed from Goddard’s initiative, following the relatively underwhelming box office performance of 2021’s “The Matrix Resurrections,” partly attributed to its concurrent streaming release amidst the pandemic. With Goddard at the helm, fans eagerly anticipate how he will breathe new life into the beloved cyberpunk universe while staying true to its
