In Hawaiian, "Honolulu" means "sheltered bay" or "place of shelter." It is said to have once been called Kou, the name of a district that roughly encompasses the area from Nuuanu Avenue to Alakea Street and from Hotel Street to Queen Street, and is the heart of today's downtown district.3Other places on Oahu with internationally renowned are Waikiki, Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head. As of the July 1, 2004 census, Honolulu's population estimates were 377,260. and for the entire county, 900,000. Barack Obama, president of the United States between 2009 and 2017, was born here in 1961.
