The gray matter consists of cellular bodies, including motor neurons and interneurons. Signals generated in the primary motor cortex go down the corticospinal tract (green) through the white matter of the spinal cord into synapses on interneurons and motor neurons in the spinal cord of the ventral horn. In turn, the neurons of the latter send their axons (blue) through the ventral roots to innervate individual muscle fibers. In this example, the signal from M1 passes through the corticospinal tract and exits the spine around the sixth cervical level. Peripheral motor neurons transmit the signal in their hands to activate a group of myofibrils in the biceps, as a result of which the muscle is contracted. Together, the ventral horn, motor neurons, its axons and myofibrils are called a single motor block (EDB) . Smaller motor neurons usually innervate smaller muscle fibers. Motor neurons can innervate any number of muscle fibers, but each fiber is innervated by only one motor neuron. When motor neurons work, the muscle fibers contract.
