Description

I am pleased to announce that we are starting the rollout of default end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls on Messenger and Facebook, as well as a range of new features to give you even more control over your messaging experience. We have a responsibility to protect your conversations, and it's thrilling for us to be able to launch a service that is both secure and private after years of investment and testing.

Since 2016, we have provided an option for people to enable end-to-end encryption on Messenger, but now we are updating private chats and calls on Messenger so that they are end-to-end encrypted by default. This update has taken us years because we want to do it right. Our engineers, cryptographers, designers, policy experts, and product managers have worked tirelessly to rebuild Messenger features from scratch.
We have built new privacy, security, and control features every step of the way, like delivery controls that let people choose who can message them, as well as app blocking capabilities and safety features like reporting, blocking, and request messages. We partner closely with external experts, academics, advocates, and governments to identify risks and ensure privacy and security go hand in hand.
