Uber accepts $178M Australia taxi lawsuit settlement
Uber has consented to pay A$271.8 million ($178 million) to resolve a lawsuit filed by drivers and taxi companies in Australia. As the ride-hailing company entered the nation, Australian taxi drivers and operators claimed they lost money, according to a law firm's Monday statement.
The lawsuit, which dates back to 2017, was initiated by Australian taxi drivers who alleged that Uber's entry into the market caused a significant decrease in the value of taxi licenses, resulting in substantial financial losses for them. The plaintiffs argued that Uber's ride-sharing platform disrupted the traditional taxi industry, leading to a decline in demand for taxi services and a corresponding drop in license values.
After years of legal proceedings, Uber has agreed to settle the case for $178 million. This settlement is expected to compensate thousands of taxi drivers across Australia who have been impacted by the disruption caused by Uber's entry into the transportation sector. Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, expressed satisfaction with the resolution, stating, "We are pleased to have reached a settlement in this matter and bring an end to the prolonged legal proceedings. We believe this settlement is fair and reflects our commitment to resolving disputes in a constructive manner."
