More people have recently begun to notice their weight. This trend comes on the heals of a report recently issued by the Surgeon General that claimed obesity in America has reached epidemic proportions. There have been many different diets and weight loss plans promoted, including some who say that taking laxatives is a good way to lose weight. Many people have begun to ask if any of the weight loss laxatives are safe.
To put it very simply, the answer to that question is no. Laxatives were developed exclusively as a treatment for constipation. And any attempts to forcefully - and unnaturally - evacuate waste can be dangerous, as they can cause the intestine to tear, making it vulnerable to potentially fatal infection.
If you have even a basic understanding of weight loss you will know that the weight you lose from laxatives is nothing but about 6 pounds of water. This weight will quickly be replaced as soon as the individual eats or drinks anything.
There are many laxatives such as stool softeners, stimulants, fiber, and saline. Over-the-counter laxatives generally combine two or three of these forms. Sometimes feces becomes hard in the body because it is too dry, and many laxatives resolve this issue by directing water from other parts of the body in order to add moisture to the feces and make it move through the intestines effortlessly. Any weight loss you get from using laxatives is nothing but water, which is very temporary.
Now that you know how laxatives work, you can see this is not a healthy or harmless method of reducing body mass. Even were they recommended as safe for this purpose, they would produce only a very limited and temporary weight loss.
